One theory is that poker developed out of the German card game pochspiel. Like poker, pochspiel includes betting, hand rankings and bluffing. However, poker is also very similar to the Persian game as nas, and R.F. Foster wrote that “the game of poker, as first played in the US… is undoubtedly the Persian game of as nas”. There was also a French casino holdem game called poque;like this game and pochspiel, the name poker is derived from the German word pochen, which means to brag and bluff. Another view is that poker developed earlier than these games, and originated in the Mississippi River Delta before 1800, and spread to the West through miners who headed to California during the 19th century gold rush. Early forms of poker differed significantly from the modern version played now, with 20-card versions, 52-card versions, straight and stud poker all being popular at one time or another. However, poker as we know it was popularized after the 1970′s.

The November Niners
The November Niners Now that the last remaining players to compete on one of the most famous, one of the most prestigious and definitely the one of the richest sporting event in the world, are completed, its time to learn a bit of them and have a taste of what could happen in the poker table come November. Dennis Phillips Dennis is a 53-year old truck driver from St. Louis, Missouri. With 900 grand in his pocket and a shot for couple of millions more, expect this humble but eager tournament amateur to slug it out against the established veteran of the trade. Ivan Demidov Ivan is a professional poker player from Moscow who cashed in on three events and landed on the Main Event finals. Surprised as he was, expect this soft-spoken online poker hotshot to twist the tables around in November. Scott Montgomery Scott is a Canadian resident who has the killer combination in WSOP a big bankroll and lots of experience. For those who tune in other tournaments, youve probably seen Scott in LA Poker Classic in 2008 where he finished fifth with almost 300 grand. Peter Eastgate Peter is a 22-year old poker player who hails from Denmark. But make no hasty remarks about his age because this young player is one of Denmarks recognized online professional players since 2005. He cashed $10,000 dollars in for a chance at the felt table, and what do you know, after much of the 6,800 heads are gone, one of the youngest player this year is sitting on the poker table this November. Ylon Schwartz Ylon is a chess player who has been gambling for 25 of his 38 years. He has made his living out of playing poker for several years, and he has no plans of stopping right now. He was the player who has the most number of cash-in in WSOP event with 12. Should he win, expect him to be out of sight for sometime because this New Yorker plans to escape to where you least expect him to be. Darus Suharto Canadian Darus Suharto is set to follow the footsteps of an unknown accountant who shocked the world how number crunchers play poker. An Indonesian-born residing in Toronto Canada, expect Moneymaker-incarnate try to turn an $80 investment into multi-million dollar prize money. David Rheem Probably the most famous of the nine, David Chino Rheem has made several previous appearances in WSOP final table. This 28-year-old professional poker player has been playing poker since he was 18. With fear set aside and Lady Luck in place, Chino is ready to take on the final table challenge. Craig Marquis This 23-year-old poker player hailing from Arlington, Texas is the one who beat Hamricks AJ out of the tournament with pocket queens. Expect Lady Luck to flutter around this young poker player, especially when you realized he was just playing poker for 18 months. Kelly Kim He maybe a wee bit shorthanded when it comes to bankroll, but dont expect him to back out just yet. A California-based business analyst who traded his portfolio for some chips, he has four months worth of time to think about how to make his narrow way to victory this November.

Poker Business Zynga’s Flip-Flop Is Zynga reversing its position on real-money online gambling? Well, that’s what one company spokesperson told All Things D on Friday. It appears Zynga has a sudden interest in the real-money space and is speaking with several potential partners about a shift into the market if legislation is passed in the U.S. We build games and experiences that our players want and love. Zynga Poker is the worlds largest online poker game with more than 7 million people playing every day and over 30 million each month,” the spokesperson said. “We know from listening to our players that theres an interest in the real money gambling market. Were in active conversations with potential partners to better understand and explore this new opportunity. Read more at PokerNews.com. Ira Rubin Makes Plea Bargain Black Friday payment processor Ira Rubin is set to face 18 to 24 months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy on Tuesday in court in Manhattan, N.Y. Rubin, 53, had been charged with nine counts in assisting PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker with deceiving banks by disguising payments as transactions with phony Internet merchants. Rubin has been jailed since last April when he was arrested in Guatemala while supposedly attempting to flee to Thailand. Rubin’s plea bargain could potentially shave decades off his maximum prison sentence because he pleaded guilty to only three of the nine charges.Read more at PokerNews.com. Poker Pros vs. UB Poker pros Brad Booth, Tom Koral and Dustin “neverwin” Woolf were among eight plaintiffs to file a RICO complaint against Excapsa Software, the former owners of Ultimate Bet. The players claim that the online poker site stole $20 million from players in a hole-card scam perpetrated by former employees. The defendants in the complaint are 6356095 Canada Inc. (Excapsa Software), and 10 John Does. The players are seeking an injunction and damages for RICO conspiracy, conversion, interference with prospective economic advantage, intentional infliction of emotional distress, unfair business practices, and fraud and negligence, according to the complaint. Booth has been very vocal about how the UB cheating scandal ruined his life. The Canadian pro told DonkDown Radio last February that he had about $2 million stolen from him during the super-user incident and lost even more money that he borrowed from his peers. You can find the full complaint against Excapsa at PokerNews.com. Taylor Caby Enjoying New Venture Taylor Caby is arguably one of the most influential figures in the growth of online poker. However, after the Department of Justice killed “40 percent” of his business at CardRunners and Hold’em Manager on Black Friday, Caby has branched out to exercise his business expertise in a new venture: fantasy sports. In September 2011, Caby launched DraftDay.com, a daily fantasy sports site that awards prizes similar to the payouts you’d find in an online poker tournament. Users can find daily games across each of the major sports in the U.S. with buy-ins ranging from freerolls all the way up to $500. Caby told Mashable.com that while he wishes the online poker crackdown had never happened, it allowed the chance for his newest venture to succeed. The site has already attracted more than 10,000 users, and 2,500 of them play the games regularly. Read the full story about Caby at Mashable.com. Ladbrokes Purchases Las Vegas Casino Software Provider U.K. bookmaker Ladbrokes has taken its first large step across the Atlantic. On Thursday, the company announced it had agreed to acquire a major stake in Las Vegas-based Stadium Technology Group, a software supplier for race- and sports-book operators in Nevada and Delaware. The $3 million purchase give Ladbrokes a 65 percent stake in the company, with a retained option to buy the remaining 35 percent of the business over the next five years on a performance-related basis. It gives Ladbrokes access to technology for customers such as the Treasure Island, Golden Nugget and Hard Rock casinos. “The size of the U.S. market and potential for positive regulatory change in the coming years make it a sensible place to establish a presence,” said Ladbrokes CEO Richard Glynn. “Stadium Technology is already one of the key software suppliers to casinos in Nevada and Delaware and it has the potential to expand.” Read more at PokerNews.com. PartyGaming Named in MegaUpload Indictment The fight to protect intellectual property continued Thursday when online file sharing site MegaUpload.com and sister site MegaVideo.com were shut down by federal authorities. The federal indictment showed that the site’s owner, Kim Dotcom (yes, that’s his name), made $42 million last year by hosting illegal copies of popular films and television shows. The indictment also shows that some of that money came from PartyGaming, the parent company of online poker site PartyPoker. Financial Times reports that PartyGaming was a major advertiser for the site, paying more than $3 million for online ads that users had to view before watching a video. MegaUpload also had ad contracts with companies such as Goodle AdSense and adBrite. The indictment can be found at sribd.com. Online Poker Melanie Weisner Lock’d Up Former Full Tilt Poker Red Pro Melanie Weisner found a new home last weekend. She also scooped a win at the 2010 EPT Monte Carlo Ladies Event for nearly $33,000. “I am thrilled to join a team of world-class players and talented peers such as Chris Moorman, Matt Stout and Leo Margets,” Weisner said. “I feel very honored to be a part of this exciting and growing brand, and look forward to representing Lock around the world.” Read the full release at 24-7pressrelease.com. DJ Lady Maverick As if she hasn’t spent enough time in the classroom already, Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Rousso is hitting the books once again. Rousso, who studied economics at Duke University before attending law school at the University of Miami, is taking classes at BerkleeMusic.com, the online extension school of Berklee College of Music, where she is pursuing a master certificate in Electronic Music Production. Rousso recently appeared in a video endorsing Berklee, where she has been taking up to five classes at a time while balancing her poker career and other endeavors. Rousso says taking the classes online enables her to continue traveling the world as a professional poker player. “If I were to think about where I would ideally like to end up with music, it would probably be where I’m traveling around the world playing tournaments, and in addition to tournaments I’m doing DJ gigs and performing songs that I’ve written recently,” she says. “If that was my life, I think I’d be as happy as possible.” View the full video at berkleemusic.com. Ch-ch-Changes Phil Galfond’s departure from Blue Fire Poker last month has prompted the high-stakes legend to launch his own blog at philgalfond.com. Galfond has already been busy; along with a video outlining his plans for the new site, he posted a blog this week that has captured the attention of the poker community. Titled Let’s Make Some Changes, Galfond makes several suggestions regarding the future of online poker. Galfond says he believes the following goals need to be considered to improve the online games: Make playing poker an easy and fun experience for both pros and recreational players; Close loopholes that allow unethical players to gain an advantage over those who choose to be more honest; and Promote the play of more hands. Galfond then dove into each of the ideas with his own thoughts on how to improve the game. The blog has been all over Twitter and even got a response from PokerStars: You can find the blog in its entirety at philgalfond.com. Poker Legislation Iowa Lawmaker Pushing for Online Poker Legalization On Tuesday, Iowa Sen. Jeff Danielson said he intends to draft a bill soon to legalize online poker in the state. Iowa has been one of many states to show support for online poker since the Department of Justice changed its position on the Wire Act of 1961 last month. Iowa lawmakers also commissioned a study last year to determine the practicality and potential income Internet poker could generate for the state. Danielson added that the DOJ’s decision could also allow states like Iowa to join jurisdictions that have already approved the activity. Nevada approved regulations for in intrastate online poker last month, and states like New Jersey and California are likely to follow. We believe that because of the Department of Justice ruling, we can now have a multi-state compact, said Danielson. Read more at the PokerNews.com. Northern Ireland Still Without Live Poker The U.S. isn’t the only country preventing poker players from hitting the felts. Despite allowing games of chance like bingo, slots and sports betting to be played for real money, Northern Ireland’s ban on live poker is still in effect after more than five years. Many residents hope that ban will soon be overturned. On Thursday, members of the Legalize Poker in Northern Ireland group appealed to the Social Development Committee to allow regulated poker clubs and tournaments. Spokesperson Glenn McCabe explained to the committee that because many poker clubs had been closed down in Northern Ireland around 2006, many games had gone “underground.” The Legalize Poker in Northern Ireland group added that poker could create up to 150 jobs in Northern Ireland The BBC reported that the response from the committee was mixed, but it was still a step forward for the movement. Following the meeting, the committee agreed to write to the Department of Social Development to ask whether it is considering changing the gambling legislation. Regardless of whether SOPA passes or not, the US government shuts down sites without due process for the purpose of stifling competition for competitors of mega corporations. This past April the DOJ shut down Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker for the purpose of driving out online competition for Caesars Entertainment and Wynn, and the NFL. The DOJ would later reverse their decision on the UIGEA directly after the sale of Full Tilt Poker to Bernard Tapie. I had stated this would be reversed when Caesars had all their ducks in a row. For all I know Anon is the DOJ and are attempting to create anarchy on the NET in order to cause a cry out from the people to pass more regulations like SOPA?

Strategy with Kristy Podcast: Jared Bleznick
November 17 2011, Kristy Arnett Related Articles Strategy with Kristy Podcast: Lex Veldhuis Discusses Pot-Limit Omaha Strategy with Kristy: Randal Flowers Discusses Bluffing Preflop Strategy with Kristy: Andrew Seidman Discusses His Book, Easy Game Share It Tags Black Friday, Jared Bleznick, Omaha, PokerNews Podcast, Poker Strategy, South Point, PokerNews Strategy Print Jared “harrington25″ Bleznick was a prominent figure in online tournaments and cash games before Black Friday. He has since moved out of the country to play but recently said he will no longer be playing online. Instead, hes offered his services as a coach. For this edition of Strategy with Kristy, brought to you by South Point, Bleznick talks about what it takes to be poker professional, beginner pot-limit Omaha strategy, and advice he has for those considering making poker a career. Here is a snippet from the interview: As a no-limit holdem player, I understand when to three-bet preflop, but in pot-limit Omaha, it seems like players are getting in buy-ins so frequently. So I guess my question is, what are you considering when three-betting in pot-limit Omaha? To talk about what you first said about players getting it in by three-betting and four-betting preflop thats honestly because everyone literally just has a gambling problem. Im being serious. Everyone just gambles in Omaha because the edges are so small in any individual hand. If you take eight-nine-ten-jack double-suited and you put it up against ace-ace-two-six with a suit, youre basically a very small dog. When you take into account the blinds and the dead money, youre basically flipping. Lets say a guy is playing with $200,000 in his account and another guy is playing with $20,000. The guy thats three-betting with eight-nine-ten-jack [with $200,000 in his account] is eventually going to bust you because youre flipping and the guy has you covered with his bankroll. As for the three-betting, I think you should be three-betting a lot more when youre deeper. It allows for a lot more play. If you three-bet a guy that has 100 big blinds, and he four-bets you with aces, at the point, youre not even playing poker anymore. Youre just gambling. If you do it when youre really deep, you can actually play poker. These guys that do that and three-bet and four-bet and constantly get it in are literally putting their money in and closing their eyes. Its just stupid, honestly. When I say the games are tough, its because the edges are small. So even if a guy is doing that, hes never in that bad a shape. Its not like in holdem where youre getting it in in a 80/20 or 70/30 situation. Youre getting it in at like 55/45. A lot of people cant overcome that. Equipped with a masters degree in psychology and years of experience as a performance coach, Tendler has become one of poker’s most respected teachers of the mental side of poker, which includes tilt, emotional control, confidence, motivation, and fear. Last week on Strategy with Kristy, brought to you by South Point, Tendler came on the show and discussed how to approach improving your mental game, the Adult Learning Model, and more. This week, host Kristy Arnett put into practice a few tips she learned from Tendler and discusses her experience. Here is a snippet from the interview: Personally, I feel like my confidence changes so much. Sometimes I feel unstoppable and other times I feel like I can’t do anything right. Can you talk a little bit about confidence and the importance of finding middle ground with it? Confidence is huge. The key thing to keep in mind with confidence is that we’re looking for it to be stable, meaning that it doesn’t swing too high or too low. Those times when you feel unstoppable are almost not as real as the times when you feel like nothing can go right. Neither one is accurate. When you feel unstoppable, some players feel like they can beat anybody like the Iveys or the Durrrrs of the world, but that’s not true. It’s an illusion, but it feels that way. In that moment, being carried away by that emotion can be very destructive on the high side. And the same thing on the other side. When a skilled player like yourself, who’s a proven winning player, feels like they can’t doing anything right, that’s as much of an illusion as feeling like you can beat anyone and you’re unstoppable. What we’re trying to do is move you more toward the middle, and the middle is not being numb. This is key because like I said last week, emotion is not the problem. Being neutral and being robotic is not what we’re looking for. We’re looking for your confidence to be much more focused around the things that you control because in the short run in poker, you can very easily have your results fueled by variance in one way or the other. If your emotions and confidence goes along with it, it will be a roller coaster of emotion along with the roller coaster of your results. That means your confidence is perfectly tied to results. What we’re trying to do is create it much more around your skill. Focus your evaluation of your game, not around how much money you won or lost in a single day, but instead on your skill. You have to be able to recognize how well you played or how poorly you played, specifically what mistakes were made, specifically what difficult spots you got yourself into that you made good decisions for. Being able to see the subtle nuances in your game and the subtle nuances in your opponent’s game, allow you to kind of tease out the results in a slightly different way than just money. That’s important to maintain that stability because if you’re able to know definitively, on a day when you lost five or six buy-ins, that you played as well as you could and that none of your C-game or B-game mistakes showed up, then you can walk away feeling pretty good. I’m not saying you feel good losing money, but you can walk away knowing that on a very difficult day, you were able to withstand those beats, withstand all those difficult hands and spots, and played as well as you could. That’s something that creates a lot more stability for confidence in the long run. Tune in every week for new episodes of Strategy with Kristy, brought to you by South Point.

Heinz Wins the WSOP
Poker fans the world over had been waiting for some time to see which poker player was going to win this years World Series of Poker Main Event. While the WSOP takes place earlier in the year, the Main Event is only played in November. Of the nine players that made it to the final table of the Main Event, five of the players were European, and three of the players were from the United States. Soon after play began, it became clear that the next WSOP Main Events champion would be from Europe. Two out of the past four Main Event champions have come from Europe. This year, Pius Heinz from Germany, was the poker player to win the World Series of Poker 2011 Main Event. The final battle was played out against Martin Staszko, from the Czech Republic. It was a heads-up duel that lasted for six hours. After his win, Pius Heinz said: I can only imagine. I don’t know. I’m going to get a lot of attention. I’m just going to wait and see what happens there. It’s going to be crazy for sure I think.” Although Heinz might have no idea how things will be when he arrives back home to Germany, he is excited and honored that he is the first Main Event champion coming from his country. Heinz had the following to say: I’m definitely proud about being the first German to win. It’s just an amazing feeling and the support from back home has been great with people following me and supporting me and wishing me the best of luck. Before the Main Event, Heinz had said that online poker is very popular in Germany, and that the market is growing. He does not know if his winning the WSOP Main Event will increase the popularity of poker in Germany or not.
